South African Singer Winnie Khumalo dies at 51

South African actress and singer Winnie Khumalo has passed away at the age of 51 following a brief illness, as confirmed by her family.

Khumalo, a prominent figure in the Afropop genre, began her musical journey in the 1980s and also featured in well-known South African television series.

She gained fame for her hit song “Live My Life” and collaborated with notable South African artists, including the late Brenda Fassie.

Her sister, Tshepi Akeepile, shared that Winnie died on Tuesday while being transported to the hospital. “My sister was unwell. She experienced a short illness, and we genuinely believed she was on the mend. However, this morning, it became evident that she had not fully recovered. She was rushed to the hospital, but sadly, she was pronounced dead,” Ms. Akeepile told SABC TV.

The specific nature of her illness remains unclear.

Khumalo leaves behind a significant legacy in music and television, recognized for her powerful voice and diverse performances.

She released several solo albums and served as a backup singer for Brenda Fassie.

She is survived by her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, who is also a singer, and her son, Thabo Khumalo.

Fans and fellow artists have expressed their condolences on social media, sharing their shock and sorrow.

Kalawa Jazmee Records, the label with which Khumalo was associated, honored her as a “true icon,” acknowledging her ability to inspire many through her remarkable voice and “unforgettable performances.”

“Her passion, talent, and commitment to her art have made a lasting impact on the industry and in the hearts of her fans,” the label stated.

Winnie Khumalo was once a back up singer to the late Brenda Fassie.
