A South African police captain is being widely commended for his exceptional courage after taking part in a dangerous recovery mission on Sunday. Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter was lowered by helicopter into a crocodile infested section of the Komati River in Mpumalanga, where he worked alone to secure a euthanised crocodile.
The risky operation enabled authorities to remove the animal safely so forensic teams could recover human remains believed to belong to a missing person. Investigators later discovered body parts inside the crocodile, which have now been sent for DNA testing to confirm the victim’s identity.
Police leadership praised Potgieter’s actions, highlighting his willingness to put his life on the line. Acting National Commissioner Lt Gen Puleng Dimpane said the captain’s bravery went far beyond normal duty and demonstrated the police service’s dedication to public safety even under extreme and life threatening conditions.
