President Andriy Rajoelina has named Ruphin Fortunat Zafisambo to a senior post just one week after dismissing his entire cabinet in response to mounting public unrest. Zafisambo, a seasoned figure from Madagascar’s administrative corps, began his military education at the Antsirabe Military Academy in 1991 and later continued his training in France, according to French broadcaster RFI.
The appointment comes as nationwide protests sparked by ongoing electricity and water outages enter their third week. The demonstrations, largely driven by students and young activists, have intensified, with fresh rallies erupting on Monday despite a heavy police presence and the use of tear gas to disperse crowds. Demands for Rajoelina’s resignation have grown louder amid the turmoil.
In a speech over the weekend, the president acknowledged the unrest and expressed willingness to engage in dialogue, but firmly rejected calls to step down. He accused political opponents of attempting to destabilize his government. During a meeting with civil society leaders on Monday, Rajoelina also confirmed he would not seek a third term in office.
