Former Finance Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has been nominated by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to serve as Tanzania’s next prime minister. Parliament is scheduled to vote on the nomination this Thursday, with approval widely anticipated.
The nomination follows President Hassan’s contentious re-election last month, in which she was declared the winner with 97 percent of the vote. The opposition has challenged the legitimacy of the results, alleging widespread electoral fraud, including vote rigging and ballot stuffing.
The election period was marked by significant unrest, with violent protests erupting both before and after the vote. Demonstrators expressed outrage over the exclusion of key opposition candidates from the race.
According to the United Nations, the protests resulted in hundreds of fatalities. However, opposition groups claim the death toll exceeds one thousand and have accused security forces of using excessive force. The government has acknowledged a lower number of casualties but has yet to release an official count.
President Hassan, who has been in office since 2021, faces mounting international scrutiny over her administration’s response to the protests and broader concerns about human rights practices under her leadership.
