The United States has issued a warning to Nigerian government officials and prominent individuals, stating that those found guilty of corruption could face visa restrictions and be barred from entering the country.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, the U.S. mission in Nigeria emphasized that the move is part of Washington’s broader commitment to promoting accountability and good governance.
This is not the first time the U.S. has taken such action. In previous years, visa bans were imposed on Nigerian politicians accused of interfering with elections and undermining democratic institutions.
The warning comes amid renewed scrutiny of corruption in Nigeria. Last month, Chatham House, a London-based policy institute, reported that despite more than two decades of reform efforts, corruption remains deeply entrenched in the country’s institutions. The report highlighted the wide-ranging consequences, including damage to democratic processes, economic decline, and stunted national growth.
Nigerian transparency advocates have echoed these concerns, pointing to ongoing allegations of public fund mismanagement and abuse of office across various levels of government.
