Israel Condemned Over Airstrike on Hamas Leaders in Qatar, Threatening Fragile Gaza Peace Talks

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is facing mounting international backlash after Israel launched a controversial strike targeting Hamas leadership in Qatar’s capital, Doha, on Tuesday. The attack, which Israeli officials claim was aimed at Hamas’ headquarters, has been condemned by both the United Nations and the Arab League as a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and a destabilizing move in the midst of delicate ceasefire negotiations.

Details of the operation remain murky, though an Israeli military spokesperson indicated that the air force was involved. Despite the strike, Qatar Airways flights continued to operate normally, and Qatari fighter jets were seen patrolling the skies above the capital.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern, stating that Qatar had been playing a constructive role in brokering peace between Israel and Hamas. “I condemn this flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar,” he said. “All parties must work towards a permanent ceasefire, not destroying it.”

The Arab League echoed the condemnation, with Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit accusing Israel of “shameful actions” and ignoring the regional consequences of its aggression. The strike has further complicated already-stalled negotiations aimed at ending the war in Gaza, which has left thousands dead and displaced many more.

The timing of the attack has raised alarm among diplomats and analysts, who fear it could derail any remaining momentum toward a ceasefire. Qatar has served as a key mediator in the conflict, hosting indirect talks between Israeli and Hamas representatives. The strike not only threatens those efforts but also risks escalating tensions with other Gulf states.

While Israel has not released evidence of Hamas activity in Doha, the decision to carry out a strike on foreign soil particularly in a country actively involved in peace efforts has sparked outrage and concern over the broader implications for regional stability.

As calls for accountability grow louder, the international community is urging restraint and renewed commitment to diplomacy. But with fears of a fresh Israeli offensive looming, the path to peace in Gaza appears more uncertain than ever.
