On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin joined fellow BRICS leaders in a high-stakes virtual summit hosted by Brazil, aimed at addressing mounting global concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive trade tariffs.
According to the Kremlin, the summit focused on deepening cooperation across trade, finance, and investment, as member nations grapple with rising economic instability. Trump’s tariffs have sent shockwaves through global markets, strained international partnerships, and sparked fears of inflation and slower growth. Still, he maintains they are essential, warning that without them, the U.S. would face economic disaster.
From Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping used the platform to champion multilateralism, calling it the “shared aspiration of the people.” He unveiled a proposal for a Global Governance Initiative, designed to reform international institutions and promote fairness and equity on the world stage.
Xi emphasized the need for stronger support of the United Nations, greater representation for the Global South, and a more democratic global order to confront shared challenges.
The summit, chaired by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, brought together leaders from a diverse group of nations including Russia, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, Indonesia, the UAE, India, and Ethiopia underscoring BRICS’ expanding influence and its commitment to reshaping global governance.
