President William Ruto has officially approved a new chairperson and six commissioners to lead Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), filling vital roles ahead of the country’s next general election in 2027. The appointments, announced via legal notice late Thursday, follow a lengthy vacancy that left the commission without leadership since early 2023.
The new officials set to serve a four year term were sworn in on Friday. Their appointment comes at a politically charged moment, as Ruto faces mounting pressure from nationwide protests driven by economic hardship, corruption, and police brutality.
The IEBC had been operating without commissioners since the expiration of previous terms and the controversial suspension of four officials in late 2022. Those suspended had rejected Ruto’s election win, citing irregularities, though Kenya’s Supreme Court upheld the result.
The selection process for new commissioners was delayed due to legal petitions, which were dismissed by a high court just hours before the appointments were made official.
With the electoral body now reconstituted, attention shifts to how it will manage the coming political climate and restore public confidence in Kenya’s democratic process.
