Russia delivered a sharp warning to the United States on Thursday, urging it to steer clear of any military involvement in the growing conflict between Israel and Iran. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova labeled such an intervention as “an extremely dangerous step with truly unpredictable negative consequences.”
Moscow also highlighted deep concerns for the safety of Russian personnel and infrastructure at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear facility built with Russian assistance and currently undergoing expansion involving more than 200 Russian workers. Due to rising regional instability, the state nuclear agency Rosatom has already pulled several dozen staff from the site. Agency chief Alexei Likhachev cautioned that an Israeli attack on the plant could unleash a disaster rivaling the 1986 Chernobyl incident.
Zakharova also reiterated Iran’s continued compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, adding that Tehran is open to dialogue with Washington provided Israeli strikes come to a halt.
