A growing wave of evacuations from Iran continues as citizens from multiple nations including Portugal, the Philippines, Finland, and others have crossed into Azerbaijan via the Astara border checkpoint, according to Azerbaijani media reports. The evacuees are reportedly on route to the capital city, Baku, for onward travel.
This follows the earlier evacuation of citizens from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. The Russian Embassy in Iran confirmed that over 200 individuals, including embassy staff families and members of the Tchaikovsky Grand Symphony Orchestra, crossed into Azerbaijan on Sunday. In total, more than 300 Russian nationals were evacuated over the weekend.
Azerbaijan also repatriated 41 of its citizens, including diplomats’ family members, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Aykhan Hajizade. Despite the movement, he emphasized that Azerbaijan’s diplomatic missions in Iran remain fully operational.
