Kenyan President William Ruto has denounced the death of 31-year-old blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody, calling it “heartbreaking and unacceptable.” He has ordered a swift and transparent investigation into the case, which has ignited national outrage and protests over police brutality.
Ojwang, who was active on social media, was arrested after alleging corruption against a senior police official. He was detained in western Kenya and later transferred to Nairobi without a court order, according to the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
Disputed Cause of Death
Authorities initially reported his death as a suicide, claiming he hit his head against a cell wall. However, a post-mortem conducted by government pathologist Bernard Media contradicted this, revealing head injuries, neck compression, and signs of assault.
Officers Suspended Amid Protests
In response to growing pressure, five police officers have been suspended pending investigations, while protesters accuse senior police officials of involvement.
With concerns over human rights violations escalating, President Ruto has vowed to end unconstitutional policing practices and has urged full cooperation in the inquiry to ensure justice is served.
