On Tuesday evening, Kenya’s President William Ruto arrived in Beijing to commence a four-day state visit to China.
This marks Ruto’s third visit to China since assuming office, following his attendance at the Third Belt and Road Forum in October 2023 and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September 2024.
Invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Ruto’s visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations in areas such as trade, transportation, and technology.
This visit comes in response to the 10% tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump on all Kenyan exports to the US, prompting Nairobi to seek diversification of its trade partnerships.
China has emerged as a primary focus, currently ranking as Kenya’s most significant trade partner.
Additionally, Beijing has vested interests in enhancing its commercial ties, as Nairobi serves as its largest trade source in East Africa.
Key topics for discussion during this visit include funding for the railway project connecting Naivasha to Malaba near the Ugandan border, as well as plans for a motorway from Nairobi to Mau Summit.
Kenya may also aim to expand its export opportunities and explore new markets for products like tea.
