A lawmaker from Senegal has officially put forward a proposal to charge former President Macky Sall with high treason.
This action comes in light of findings from the Court of Auditors that allege significant financial misconduct during Sall’s time in office from 2019 to 2023.
The report highlights issues such as forgery, embezzlement, money laundering, and unlawful enrichment.
Current Justice Minister Ousmane Diagne has stated that the investigation is currently focused solely on financial crimes, but he did not dismiss the possibility of future high treason charges if enough evidence is uncovered.

According to Senegal’s Constitution, a former president can only face prosecution for high treason with the approval of parliament and a trial by the High Court of Justice.
This proposal reflects previous calls from civil society and opposition groups for accountability. If the National Assembly approves it, it could result in a landmark legal case in Senegal’s democratic history.
