Russian President Vladimir Putin held discussions with Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embalo at the Kremlin on Wednesday.
These talks are part of Russia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen economic and security relationships with nations in West and Central Africa.
The leaders reportedly focused on enhancing cooperation between their countries, along with addressing various international and regional matters.
According to the Russian news agency TASS, potential areas for collaboration include mineral resources, infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and fishing.
“Last year, trade turnover between Russia and the African continent saw a 10% increase. However, it is clear that trade and economic relations between our nations need careful attention from both sides,” Putin stated.
He expressed hope that they could reach an agreement to accelerate cooperation between their countries.
“There is a solid foundation and numerous opportunities here, and many of our companies are increasingly interested in engaging with your market,” he noted.
In response, Embalo emphasized that Russia and Guinea-Bissau are “partners.”
“I am here to reaffirm the bond of friendship that exists between the Russian people and the people of Guinea-Bissau. This fraternal relationship has always been present,” he remarked.
Embalo’s visit to Russia coincides with opposition threats to disrupt Guinea-Bissau on Thursday amid a dispute regarding the end of his five-year term.
Opponents claim his presidency concludes on Thursday, while the country’s Supreme Court of Justice has determined it ends on September 4.
