Kenya has enhanced security measures along its border with Ethiopia following a violent confrontation between Ethiopian fishermen and their Kenyan counterparts at the Omo River, resulting in several individuals being reported missing.
The altercation involved the Turkana community from Kenya and the Dassanech community from Ethiopia, both of whom engage in shared economic activities such as fishing. This incident has raised significant alarm within both communities.
Kenyan Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen commented on the situation, highlighting the distress caused by the uncertainty surrounding the missing persons. “Over twenty individuals are unaccounted for. If we had confirmation of their status, whether deceased or injured, it would be more manageable than the current uncertainty. The lack of knowledge about their fate is particularly distressing,” Murkomen stated.
The Kenyan government has confirmed its commitment to working in close partnership with Ethiopian authorities to locate the missing individuals and facilitate their safe return. Murkomen detailed the cooperative efforts, stating, “The Regional Commissioner is present with us. We are forming a team led by the County Commissioner, who will travel to Ethiopia tomorrow to engage with local officials. Our aim is to work together to locate and recover our people.”
In addition to addressing the immediate crisis, the Interior Minister announced intentions to establish a border post to oversee all cross-border activities. This initiative aims to implement thorough checks on individuals entering Kenya, thereby preventing future conflicts and enhancing security in the region.
