U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal for Washington to assume control of the Gaza Strip and manage its reconstruction has elicited immediate and intense responses throughout the Middle East.
During a speech on Tuesday, Trump suggested relocating displaced Palestinians from Gaza and asserted that the U.S. would take charge of the rebuilding efforts, which would include clearing unexploded ordnance, demolishing ruined structures, and fostering economic development in the area.
These statements have heightened tensions amid ongoing ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel.
Saudi Arabia, a significant player in regional diplomacy, was quick to dismiss the proposal. On Wednesday, its Foreign Ministry released a strong statement reaffirming its longstanding support for an independent Palestinian state. The statement highlighted Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s commitment to the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, emphasizing that diplomatic relations with Israel would not proceed without this prerequisite.
Saudi Arabia has been in discussions with the U.S. regarding the normalization of relations with Israel in return for security assurances and other agreements. However, Trump’s recent remarks are expected to complicate these negotiations and exacerbate regional tensions.
