Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed highlighted that Africa has regrettably become a central hub for global terrorism.
During her address to the Security Council today (21 Jan), she stated that terrorism, in its many manifestations, represents the most significant threat to peace, security, and sustainable development on the continent at this moment.
She noted that Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for nearly 59 percent of all terrorism-related fatalities worldwide.
The Sahel region has emerged as the epicenter of one of the most critical crises, with terrorism-related deaths surpassing 6,000 for three consecutive years, which constitutes more than half of the global total.
Burkina Faso has been identified as the nation with the highest number of terrorism-related deaths, witnessing a staggering 68 percent increase, while receiving limited support to address this alarming trend.
She also emphasized that affiliates of Al-Qaida and the Islamic State have expanded their influence to the coastal countries of West Africa, with violent incidents increasing by over 250 percent in just two years.
