The United Hearts Movement (MCU), led by Central African President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, has formalized a cooperation agreement with United Russia, the political party associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This agreement, which was signed remotely on Monday, marks a significant step in the strengthening relationship between Bangui and Moscow. The announcement came shortly after President Touadéra’s return from a three-day official visit to Russia.
Representing the Russian side was Andrei Klimov, a prominent member of United Russia and a senator currently under Western sanctions due to his support for the invasion of Ukraine.
On the Central African side, Simplice Mathieu Sarandji, a close ally of President Touadéra and the president of the National Assembly, signed the agreement. He did so while adorned with a ceremonial scarf featuring the president’s image.
The signing was attended by several Russian officials, including Ambassador Alexandre Bikantov, Consul Vladislav Ilin, and Dimitri Sityi, who directs the Russian House in Bangui and plays a crucial role in the local operations of the Wagner Group.
The Russian Embassy characterized the agreement as a move towards “new horizons” in collaboration, aimed at enhancing the relationship through joint initiatives and legislative exchanges.
The timing of this agreement is particularly noteworthy, as it follows President Touadéra’s visit to Moscow and aligns with the early mobilization of his political supporters in anticipation of the presidential election set for later this year.
Critics of the government have voiced apprehensions regarding the ramifications of the agreement. Opposition leader Crépin Mboli-Goumba has expressed his concerns, asserting, “The MCU aims to emulate United Russia—expansive, authoritarian, intertwining with state institutions and the judiciary, and suppressing any opposition.”
This alliance underscores the growing ties between the Central African Republic and Russia, prompting inquiries about its effects on the nation’s political dynamics and sovereignty.
