President-elect Donald Trump held a lively rally on the eve of his inauguration, vowing to initiate immediate changes to the federal government and rapidly alter federal priorities, declaring that “the curtain closes on four long years of American decline.”
The Capital One Arena in downtown Washington was nearly filled to its capacity of over 20,000 as supporters gathered for a “Make America Great” victory celebration. They erupted in applause as Trump outlined his plans for swift actions, including tightening border security, expanding oil drilling, reducing the federal workforce, and eliminating diversity programs.
“We’re going to deliver the best first day, the most significant first week, and the most remarkable first 100 days of any presidency in American history,” Trump asserted, also pledging to reverse executive actions taken by outgoing President Joe Biden “within hours.”
In a unique approach, Trump made his entrance at the concourse level of the arena, taking his time to walk down the stairs while frequently stopping to engage with attendees, pump his fist, and take photos. The atmosphere became even more festive after his speech when the Village People performed, and the president-elect joined in singing and dancing to “YMCA,” a campaign favorite.
Trump indicated that he would kickstart his agenda with a series of executive actions from the White House, assuring the crowd, “You’re going to see executive orders that will make you extremely happy. Many of them.” He later promised attendees at a dinner reception, “Tomorrow we will not waste a single moment.”
This rally marked Trump’s first full day back in Washington since his Election Day win, providing an opportunity to rally his core supporters ahead of the formal celebrations of Inauguration Day.
