Tidjane Thiam intends to make a comeback as the leader of the PDCI opposition party in Ivory Coast

The PDCI opposition party in Ivory Coast has established 45 polling stations nationwide and abroad to elect a new leader.

This decision follows the resignation of Tidjane Thiam, who was elected president in December 2023, due to his dual nationality.

According to party rules, the leader must be exclusively Ivorian, yet Thiam retained his French citizenship at the time of his election. This strategy aims to circumvent challenges to his eligibility.

Party member Pierre Kouamé remarked, ‘We needed to be strategic, and the PDCI has once again demonstrated that it is a remarkable party—a party of hope.’

Another member, Yoma Fouka Hervé, referred to the vote as a ‘strategic vote,’ emphasizing the importance of responding to the party’s call for participation in the election of its various bodies.

Thiam officially renounced his French citizenship in March and is now the sole candidate to succeed himself as the PDCI leader.

However, a significant challenge looms ahead—the presidential race.

Thiam’s presidential campaign has faced challenges related to his nationality, as candidates are prohibited from holding dual citizenship. Born in Ivory Coast, Thiam renounced his French citizenship in March to pursue his presidential ambitions.

Political analyst Koua Geoffrey noted that the PDCI is relying on ‘some political optimism,’ hoping for a dialogue between the opposition and the government, particularly concerning a possible revision of the electoral roll, which could enable Thiam to register without the risk of disqualification.

Nevertheless, Geoffrey cautioned that substantial legal and political obstacles remain, suggesting that the PDCI must seriously contemplate a Plan B, especially with the 2025 presidential election approaching, as Thiam’s potential ineligibility could hinder his candidacy unless circumstances change.
