Ex Malian Prime Minister Maiga may face corruption charges

Former Malian Prime Minister Choguel Maiga faces allegations of embezzlement from the agency tasked with overseeing public expenditures.

The authority’s report highlights multiple instances of financial misconduct involving substantial amounts of money. It is alleged that the former Prime Minister either concealed some of these incidents or gained from them.

The auditor’s findings indicate that there was “excessive spending on personnel” throughout the 2020-2023 timeframe. This includes nearly €20,000 spent on phone subscriptions and equipment such as Wi-Fi and computers intended for educational institutions.

Maiga held the position of Prime Minister from June 2021 until his dismissal in November 2024 by junta leader Col Assimi Goïta, a decision that followed Maiga’s criticism of the junta’s transparency regarding a promised return to democratic governance.

To date, he has not publicly addressed the embezzlement claims.

Previously, Maiga expressed his views on the auditor’s investigation, asserting that he maintained a “clear conscience.”

General Assimi Goita sacked Choguel Maiga following Maiga’s criticism of the junta’s transparency regarding a promised return to democratic governance.
