In April 2025, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of Sudan took control of the Zamzam displacement camp in North Darfur after a violent three-day attack.
This assault led to the deaths of more than 400 civilians, including women, children, and aid workers, and compelled around 400,000 residents to escape.
The RSF defended their actions by claiming that the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) were utilizing the camp as a military stronghold and were using civilians as human shields.
Nevertheless, humanitarian organizations have denounced the attack, emphasizing the severe conditions in Zamzam, where famine was declared in August 2024.
The conflict, which has been ongoing since April 2023, has wreaked havoc in Sudan, displacing over 12 million individuals and leaving nearly half of the population facing severe hunger.

The actions of the RSF in Zamzam have intensified the humanitarian crisis, prompting international outrage and demands for increased assistance and intervention.
