The Sudanese Foreign Minister expressed his appreciation to Russia for its backing in the United Nations Security Council during his visit to Moscow on Wednesday.
Ali Yousuf Ahmed Al-Sharif made these remarks at a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, noting that Russia had blocked efforts to pass a resolution that would allow for international UN forces to intervene in Sudan.
“We firmly oppose any intervention in Sudanese affairs,” he stated. “We are here to extend our gratitude to the leadership, government, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation for their supportive position regarding Sudan in the United Nations Security Council.”
Al-Sharif emphasized the collaborative efforts towards achieving peace, stability, and respect for national sovereignty.
Since the popular uprising that ousted long-time autocratic President Omar al-Bashir in 2019, Sudan has faced ongoing instability. A brief transition to democracy was interrupted by a military coup in 2021 led by army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan and Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
In 2023, conflict erupted between the RSF and Sudan’s military, resulting in over 28,000 fatalities and displacing millions.
