Search and rescue teams were working on Wednesday in western Uganda after a boat capsized on the Nguse River, leaving at least 20 people feared dead.
The vessel, carrying more than 30 passengers, sank on Tuesday evening. So far, eight survivors have been rescued and are receiving medical care, while authorities have called on relatives of those onboard to come forward.
Marine police in Kigadi District have opened an investigation into the incident. Early indications suggest that overloading, traveling at night, and the condition of the boat may have contributed to the accident.
Reports indicate the canoe, believed to be locally made, was transporting bags of charcoal at the time it overturned.
The area has experienced several similar accidents in recent years, especially around Lake Victoria. In 2018, a major ferry disaster on the Tanzanian side of the lake claimed hundreds of lives.
