Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, son of former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, has been killed in the town of Zintan, according to Libyan officials on Tuesday.
Authorities have not released details about the circumstances surrounding his death. However, local media reports say he was shot and killed by armed men at his residence.
Born in June 1972, Seif al-Islam Gadhafi earned a PhD from the London School of Economics and was widely viewed as the reform-minded figure within his father’s regime.
Moammar Gadhafi was overthrown in a NATO-backed popular uprising in 2011, ending his more than four decades in power. He was killed later that year as the conflict descended into a prolonged civil war.
Seif al-Islam was captured in 2011 while attempting to flee to neighboring Niger. He was released by his captors in June 2017 and had been living in Zintan since then.
In 2015, a Libyan court sentenced him to death in absentia after convicting him of inciting violence and the killing of protesters. He was also wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity linked to the 2011 uprising.
