South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed deep concern over recent United States military action in Venezuela, calling for the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
In a statement, Ramaphosa warned that the developments pose a serious threat to regional stability and international peace. He urged the United Nations Security Council to intervene, stressing that it is the only international body mandated to address matters related to global peace and security.
Ramaphosa said the capture of President Maduro constitutes a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter. He cautioned that such actions risk undermining the global rules-based order and could set a dangerous precedent by effectively giving “carte blanche” for military interventions against sovereign states.
“The Security Council must exercise its collective wisdom to resolve this crisis through lawful and multilateral means,” Ramaphosa said.
International reaction to the US move has been sharply divided. China and Russia have strongly condemned the action, describing it as unlawful and destabilizing, while some other countries have voiced support, further deepening global divisions over the issue.
