Algeria secured a place in the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals on Tuesday after edging past the Democratic Republic of Congo 1–0 in a dramatic encounter in Rabat.
The tightly contested match was decided deep into extra time, when winger Adil Boulbina struck in the 119th minute to break Congolese resistance and send the Fennec Foxes through. The late goal sparked wild celebrations among Algerian supporters, turning the white-and-green-filled stands into a scene of jubilation.
Congo entered the contest with confidence and put up a determined fight, matching Algeria’s intensity for much of the game. However, Algeria controlled possession and applied sustained pressure, repeatedly forcing the Congolese defense into desperate clearances.
The match also drew attention for the presence of well-known Congolese supporter Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, who once again became a focal point in the stands. Standing on a pedestal, he raised his right hand at kickoff in a pose honoring slain independence hero Patrice Lumumba, holding it until halftime. He later applauded fellow fans before resuming the gesture for the second half and extra time, eventually shedding tears at the final whistle.
Despite the defeat, Congo now turn their attention to a World Cup playoff, where the Leopards will face either New Caledonia or Jamaica in March for one of the remaining qualification spots.
Algeria, meanwhile, continue their AFCON campaign and will meet Nigeria in the quarterfinals in Marrakech on Saturday. The Super Eagles advanced after a commanding 4–0 victory over Mozambique on Monday.
