Members of Nigeria’s largest labour union staged a protest in Lagos on Wednesday, demanding urgent government action to address the country’s worsening security situation.
Hundreds of demonstrators from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) marched along major roads in the commercial hub, holding placards and chanting slogans condemning kidnappings, armed robberies, and violent killings nationwide.
The protesters said growing insecurity has placed workers’ lives and livelihoods at risk, with many fearful of commuting daily or travelling ahead of the festive season.
Labour leaders criticised the government for what they described as a lack of decisive response, despite repeated calls to tackle the problem.
Insecurity remains a persistent challenge in Nigeria, with frequent reports of ransom kidnappings and bandit attacks in various regions.
Police were deployed to monitor the demonstration, which proceeded without incident.
While the federal government maintains that it is addressing insecurity through military operations and police reforms, labour unions and civil society organisations insist that stronger and more effective measures are urgently required.
