Thousands of MCU party supporters filled the streets of Bangui on Thursday, rallying behind President Faustin-Archange Touadéra as he made his way to the National Elections Authority to officially submit his candidacy for the upcoming presidential and legislative elections, set for December 28 in the Central African Republic.
Touadéra, the first to file his nomination, expressed gratitude to the crowd for their unwavering support. “Today it is done,” he declared. “I truly want to thank the Central African people for their encouragement and commitment.”
The event marked a powerful display of political backing that Touadéra hopes will translate into votes. “On December 28, I hope this support will be reflected at the ballot box,” he said confidently. “The political bureau has already submitted the file, and according to the national executive secretariat, we are number one.”
Among the crowd was Bangui resident Théodora Zimongo, who described the moment as historic. “My joy is immense,” she said. “People came from every corner of the capital Bimbo, Begoua to stand behind our president as he submitted his candidacy. It’s the first time we’ve seen such unity.”
Meanwhile, opposition groups who have vocally opposed Touadéra’s bid for a third term continue to call for dialogue. They argue that meaningful engagement is essential to ensure the elections are conducted fairly and transparently.
