Essaouira, a picturesque city on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, is grappling with an intensifying sand encroachment crisis that threatens its fragile ecosystem and urban landscape. Entire neighborhoods are being swallowed by advancing sand dunes, raising alarms over a looming environmental disaster.
Local activist Ounes Lassfar voiced growing concern: “We hope authorities find a lasting solution to this sand encroachment issue so it doesn’t return next year. Our beautiful tourist city shouldn’t be burdened by small problems that spiral out of control especially with major events like the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup on the horizon.”
The phenomenon is part of a broader climate challenge facing Morocco, one of North Africa’s most affected countries. In recent years, the nation has endured extreme weather patterns, including prolonged droughts and devastating floods, further straining its environmental resilience.
As the dunes continue to advance, residents and environmentalists are urging swift and coordinated action to protect Essaouira’s heritage, infrastructure, and natural beauty.
