Venancio Mondlane, a prominent opposition figure in Mozambique, is facing five criminal charges, including inciting terrorism, following unrest sparked by last year’s disputed elections.
Known for his outspoken criticism of the ruling FRELIMO party, Mondlane claims the accusations are politically motivated, accusing the government of retaliating against his public allegations of large scale electoral fraud in the October 9 vote, which secured victory for President Daniel Chapo.
In the wake of the election, Mondlane led widespread protests that turned deadly, leaving over 400 people dead and 600 injured incidents many blame on law enforcement. Now, 31 police officers are set to stand trial in connection with the violence.
Despite the charges, Mondlane says he enters court “with a clear conscience,” supported by an international legal team. He also accuses the Chapo administration of violating a peace agreement the two sides signed in March a deal that had sparked optimism and ushered in democratic reforms, including a national reconciliation law passed in April.
Yet rising tensions threaten those gains, with growing concern over the stability of Mozambique’s democracy.
