Thomas Partey, former Arsenal and Ghanaian international footballer, has been formally charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, according to the Metropolitan Police. The alleged offences are reported to have taken place between 2021 and 2022 and involve three women.
The charges follow a police investigation that began in February 2022 after an initial report of rape was received. Specific allegations include two counts of rape involving one woman, three counts tied to another, and a sexual assault relating to a third.
Partey’s lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, stated that he denies all allegations and “welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.” She added that Partey has cooperated fully with investigators throughout the three year inquiry but will not make further public comments due to ongoing proceedings.
Now 32, Partey’s contract with Arsenal expired on June 30, 2025, ending his tenure with the club which began in 2020 following a £45.3 million transfer from Atlético Madrid. Over five seasons, he made 130 Premier League appearances, scored nine goals, and contributed notably to the team’s second place finish last season and its Champions League semi-final run.
Neither Arsenal, the Football Association, nor the Premier League have commented on the case. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, leading the investigation, emphasized support for the women involved and encouraged others with relevant information to contact the police at CIT@met.police.uk.
Partey, who resides in Hertfordshire, is expected to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 5. He has also earned over 50 caps for Ghana’s national team, most recently appearing in World Cup qualifying matches earlier this year.
