Gilbert Deya, the infamous Kenyan preacher who once claimed to create “miracle pregnancies,” died in a car crash Tuesday evening near Kisumu in western Kenya. Authorities reported that his vehicle collided with a university bus and another car, resulting in his death at the scene.
At least 30 others sustained injuries, including Deya’s wife and 15 students traveling on the bus.
Deya, who ran a ministry in London, gained notoriety in the early 2000s for promising infertile couples miraculous babies through prayer. His church was later linked to an alleged child-trafficking operation, leading to his extradition from the UK after years of legal wrangling. He was acquitted two years ago due to lack of evidence.
Siaya County Governor James Orengo expressed “deep sorrow and regret” over the incident and confirmed that one of the vehicles involved belonged to the county. The accident has sent shockwaves across the region, marking a dramatic end to the life of a man long surrounded by controversy.
