A recent report from the Timbuktu Institute has revealed that jihadist activities, particularly those conducted by the JNIM group, have significantly increased in the Kayes region from 2021 to 2024.
The institute notes that JNIM is now attempting to extend its influence into eastern Senegal, having ramped up its attacks sevenfold over the last three years.
The Kayes region, situated at the intersection of Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal, has been particularly affected. JNIM, an extremist organization affiliated with al-Qaida, has been responsible for numerous assaults throughout the Sahel region, which includes Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Benin, and Chad.
Recently, Benin has suffered from a devastating attack that resulted in the deaths of at least 70 soldiers, highlighting the ongoing spillover violence from neighboring Sahel countries like Burkina Faso and Niger as they combat Islamic extremist factions.

The tri-border area has historically been a focal point for extremist violence, especially around the W-Arly-Pendjari Complex, a vast national park that extends into all three nations and has become a strategic base for militants launching cross-border operations.
