Several children lost their lives during a stampede that occurred on Wednesday at a funfair in southwestern Nigeria, according to officials.
The tragic event took place at the Islamic High School in Basorun, located in Oyo State, near Lagos, a major economic center. Security personnel responded promptly to the situation and apprehended the event organizers, as stated by state governor Seyi Makinde.
“Earlier today, an incident transpired at the Islamic High School Basorun, where a family-oriented event was being held. Unfortunately, a stampede at the location resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. This is indeed a very sorrowful day,” Makinde remarked.
“We extend our condolences to the parents whose happiness has been abruptly transformed into grief due to these tragic losses,” he continued.
Nigeria’s national emergency services reported that a team has been dispatched to assist the victims.
Injured children were transported to local hospitals, where parents were encouraged to inquire about missing individuals.
Footage from the scene depicted a large gathering, primarily of children, observing as some were carried away from an open area.
Local media identified the event organizers as the Women In Need Of Guidance and Support Foundation, which had conducted a similar event for children the previous year.
The organization was reportedly preparing to accommodate up to 5,000 young attendees at this year’s event, as reported by Oyo-based Agidigbo FM radio station, which had featured the organizers on its program. They mentioned that children “will have the chance to win exciting prizes such as scholarships and other generous gifts.”
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede has been initiated, with Makinde stating that “anyone directly or indirectly involved in this tragedy will be held accountable.”
