Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman was honored as the Confederation of African Football’s Player of the Year for 2024 during a prestigious ceremony held in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday.
The Atalanta forward triumphed over notable contenders, including Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, Ivorian Simon Adingra, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, to secure this esteemed accolade.
At 27 years old, Lookman joins a distinguished group of Nigerian footballers who have previously received this honor, following last year’s recipient, Victor Osimhen.
Lookman enjoyed an outstanding season, excelling both at the club level and with the national team, which made him a leading candidate for the award.
He showcased his talent with a remarkable hat-trick in the Europa League final, further establishing himself as one of Europe’s top forwards.
Additionally, he played a vital role in the Super Eagles’ runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, netting three goals during the tournament.
The former Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City player was also the sole African representative on this year’s men’s Ballon d’Or shortlist, finishing in 14th place.
Zambia’s Barbra Banda received the women’s award, marking a historic achievement as the first woman from her country to win this honor.
Banda scored four goals for Zambia at the 2024 Paris Olympics, including a hat-trick in a group-stage match against Australia.
The striker also netted 13 goals during the regular season and four in the playoffs for the American team, Orlando Pride, contributing to their first-ever US National Women’s Soccer League title.
