The International Criminal Court (ICC) has imposed a 10-year prison sentence on a prominent member of a Malian armed faction for war crimes and crimes against humanity that occurred over ten years ago in Timbuktu.
Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz was found guilty in June of various offenses, including torture, rape, and sexual slavery, in addition to the destruction of religious and historical sites. These acts took place while he served as the police chief during the nearly year-long control of Timbuktu by the al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansar al-Din group in 2012.
Judge Kimberly Prost, who presided over the case, stated on Wednesday that the 47-year-old played a significant role in the oppressive regime of Ansar al-Din, which inflicted a “traumatic effect on the population of Timbuktu.” She described the environment during that time as one filled with “fear, violence, oppression, [and] humiliation,” emphasizing that the memories of this period continue to haunt the victims, resulting in profound trauma.
The judge remarked that the sentence “is proportionate to the gravity of the crimes and the individual circumstances and culpability of Mr. Al Hassan,” and it serves as a reflection of the international community’s strong condemnation of his actions, acknowledging the considerable suffering endured by the victims.
Dressed in traditional all-white West African attire with a turban, Al Hassan displayed no visible emotion as the sentence was pronounced, though he listened attentively with his hands resting in his lap before being escorted away by ICC security personnel.
Reports indicate that among the atrocities committed by Al Hassan were “cruel treatment as a war crime” for flogging an individual, “mutilation” for amputating a hand, and “torture as a crime against humanity and a war crime.” The court also heard testimonies regarding the arrest and subsequent rape of women during the Ansar al-Din regime, alongside instances of public floggings in the central square, witnessed by crowds, including children, as well as a public amputation.
