Following a dramatic shift in Madagascar’s leadership, Colonel Michael Randrianirina who recently assumed the presidency after a military-led takeover has named Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo as the country’s new prime minister.
Randrianirina was officially sworn in last Friday, just days after seizing control in the wake of widespread youth-led protests that ousted former president Andry Rajoelina. The demonstrations, which began in September over persistent water and electricity shortages, quickly escalated into a nationwide call for political reform, driven largely by the country’s Gen Z population.
Rajaonarivelo, a prominent figure in Madagascar’s financial sector and former head of Banque nationale de l’industrie (BNI), was chosen for his extensive experience and strong ties to international organizations. He replaces Ruphin Zafisambo, who had been appointed by Rajoelina only two weeks prior.
Despite being impeached by lawmakers after fleeing the country, Rajoelina has condemned the military’s actions and continues to reject the legitimacy of the new government from exile.
The appointment of Rajaonarivelo marks a significant step in Randrianirina’s efforts to stabilize the nation and build a civilian-led administration, with promises of future elections and international cooperation.
