The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone as its new Chairman, succeeding Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who completed a two-term tenure marked by efforts to address political instability and promote regional unity. The transition was formalized during the 67th Ordinary Session in Abuja, Nigeria.

In a symbolic handover, Tinubu praised the progress made under his leadership and called for continued unity, stressing that democratic values and economic integration must go hand in hand. Reflecting on the region’s struggles with coups, security crises, and economic headwinds, he urged fellow leaders to prioritize inclusive growth and regional cooperation.

President Bio, in his acceptance speech, laid out an ambitious vision for a “people-centered and action-oriented ECOWAS.” He identified four core priorities: restoring constitutional governance, enhancing regional security, advancing economic integration, and strengthening institutional credibility. He acknowledged the pressures facing the bloc from terrorism and transnational crime to youth unrest and economic fragility while expressing optimism about ECOWAS’s ability to meet these challenges.

Bio also commended his predecessor for fostering dialogue and stability during difficult times, vowing to build on that legacy with reforms that will make ECOWAS more responsive and effective.
