The Oyo State Police Command in Nigeria has announced the arrest of Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, along with seven other individuals in connection with the tragic Christmas party incident in Ibadan, Oyo State.
According to a statement from SP Osifeso Adewale, the police have confirmed that 35 children have lost their lives, with six others sustaining critical injuries.
Africa24hrs previously reported that Agidigbo FM, a well-known private radio station, distanced itself from the unfortunate children’s festive event that led to multiple fatalities on Wednesday morning in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
The station had earlier covered the news of the tragedy that unfolded at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, where a stampede occurred during the children’s Christmas celebration.
The management of Agidigbo FM clarified that they were neither sponsors nor organizers of the event, contrary to earlier claims. They identified the event’s organizer as WINGS (Women In Need Of Guidance and Support), founded by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.
Witnesses reported that many children were caught in the chaos, resulting in numerous injuries.
In a recent statement, the police reported, “Following the stampede incident that occurred on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Islamic High School in Basorun, Ibadan, during a family event organized by Wings Foundation in collaboration with media partners Agidigbo FM, the Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform the public that eight individuals have been arrested for their respective roles in the incident.
“Those apprehended include the primary event sponsor, Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, aged 31, Fasasi Abdulahi, aged 56 (the Principal of Islamic High School, Ibadan), Genesis Christopher, aged 24, Tanimowo Moruf, aged 52, Anisolaja Olabode, aged 42, Idowu Ibrahim, aged 35, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin, aged 25.
“Currently, thirty-five minors have been confirmed deceased, while six others are in critical condition and receiving medical treatment.
“The investigation has been escalated to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Iyaganku, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the case.
“Residents in the area are urged to remain calm, as there will be increased patrols and a visible police presence to deter any potential criminal activity stemming from this unfortunate event.
“Lastly, the Oyo State Police Command extends its condolences to all families and loved ones affected by this tragedy and assures the community that justice will be pursued diligently.”
