Authorities in Nigeria’s Borno State have confirmed that nine people were killed and four others injured in a deadly attack carried out by Boko Haram militants on the border community of Malam Fatori. The incident, revealed on Sunday by Governor Babagana Zulum via his representative, Local Government Commissioner Sugun Mai Mele has intensified concerns over a resurgence of extremist violence in the region.
Malam Fatori, located near the Chad border and approximately 270 kilometers from the state capital, Maiduguri, has long faced security threats due to its remote location. While the governor did not specify the date of the attack, his visit to the affected area included a stern warning to residents against aiding insurgents. “Anyone found collaborating with the insurgents to bring harm or attack to the people of Malam Fatori will be cursed,” Mele declared. Efforts are reportedly underway to bolster defenses in the town and prevent future raids.
In recent months, northeast Nigeria has witnessed a troubling uptick in violent activities attributed to Boko Haram. Militants have targeted military outposts, planted roadside explosives, and conducted assaults on civilian communities fueling fears of a return to the devastating levels of insecurity experienced during the group’s peak.
Just last month, a suspected female suicide bomber detonated explosives in a restaurant in the Konduga area, resulting in at least 10 deaths and multiple injuries. That incident further highlighted the persistent threat facing Borno State as authorities work to contain the extremist violence.
